À propos Mike
Science has been both my profession and my passion for over a decade. Before moving into education, I spent eleven years as a development scientist in the UK biopharmaceutical industry, working on some of the most technically demanding projects in modern medicine — including the purification and clinical-scale manufacture of viral gene therapy products. That background informs everything I do in the classroom.
I relocated to Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 and now work as a full-time bioscience tutor, supporting students across IB Biology, A-Level, IGCSE, and university-level courses. My qualifications include a BSc in Applied Bioscience from the University of Kent, an HNC in Applied Biology (Distinction), and a TEFL certificate — but what my students value most is the depth of understanding I bring from years of working at the frontier of biological science.
Teaching, for me, is an extension of the same commitment to clarity and precision that defined my scientific career. Whether a student needs to master a concept for the first time or sharpen their technique ahead of final exams, I bring the same focus to every session: understand the science properly, apply it to the question in front of you, and earn the marks.

My students are typically sitting IB Biology HL or SL, A-Level Biology (any UK exam board), IGCSE or Cambridge Lower Secondary Science, or first-year university bioscience modules. I work well with high-achieving students who want to push for top marks, students who have fallen behind and need to rebuild their foundations, and those preparing personal statements or interview answers for science degree applications. I have particular experience supporting students at international schools across Asia, and with learners whose first language is not English — adapting my explanations without sacrificing scientific
The gap between a 5 and a 7 in IB Biology is rarely about how hard a student is working. It is almost always about depth of understanding — being able to explain not just what happens, but why, and how, and what would change if the conditions were different. That is where genuine scientific experience makes the difference.
Before becoming a tutor, I led GMP-scale production of gene therapy medicines — running techniques like viral vector purification, chromatography, and molecular analysis as part of regulated clinical manufacturing, not just as laboratory exercises. When I teach PCR, protein synthesis, or the mechanism of viral infection, I can draw on direct, applied knowledge that no textbook provides. Students notice the difference
My starting point with every student is a diagnostic conversation — I want to understand which topics feel uncertain, how they currently approach exam questions, and what their target grade is. From there I build a plan around their syllabus, their timeline, and their specific gaps.
Sessions are structured but flexible. I use a mix of concept explanation, annotated worked examples, and timed past-paper practice — always tied back to the mark scheme. I place a strong emphasis on scientific literacy: using precise terminology, constructing clear arguments, and avoiding the vague phrasing that costs marks even when the underlying understanding is sound. Between lessons, I send short review notes and suggested questions so students consolidate what we covered before the next.
Most lessons run for 60 to 90 minutes and follow a consistent structure:
— Opening recall: I ask the student to explain the previous topic back to me without prompts. This takes 10 minutes and immediately reveals any gaps.
— Core teaching: 30–40 minutes on new material or a problem area, using a shared whiteboard, diagrams, and real-world examples.
— Applied practice: 15–20 minutes working through exam-style questions, marked live against the mark scheme with commentary on what earns full marks.
— Close: A short summary of key points and a clear task to complete before next time.
For students working on an Internal Assessment, I adapt this structure entirely — IA sessions focus on experimental design, data processing, or written analysis, reviewed with examiner-level critical feedback.
